Since the inception of the Indian Premier League in the year 2008, an Emerging Player award has been presented to a young player who has performed exceedingly well throughout the tournament.
What is an Emerging Player Award?
An emerging player award is an award that is given to the best performer of the season but there are certain rules that allow a player to be considered for award nominations and they are given below-
- The player should have played five or fewer Test matches
- or should have played 20 or fewer ODI’s.
- The player will be eligible only if he has been a part of 25 or fewer IPL matches at the start of the tournament.
- If a player has won the award in a previous season, then he/she won’t be eligible the next time.

How many Emerging players have been awarded in IPL?
So far 14 young players have been selected as the Emerging Player Award winners in the IPL. Surprisingly, Only once in the 14-year history of IPL, a foreign player has won this award.
List of Emerging player award winners in IPL history
1. Shreevats Goswami (2008)
In the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, the left-handed wicket-keeper batsman became the first emerging player in the history of the IPL to win the award. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he played a total of four matches and scored 82 runs with a high score of 52 runs including an average of 27.33 and a strike rate of 96.47.
He scored his first-ever half-century in the debut match against Deccan Chargers (52 off 42) on 19th May with seven fours and a six.

2. Rohit Sharma (2009)
One of the greatest batters of the modern era and the captain of MI (five times IPL champion) Rohit Sharma was the second player to win the emerging player award playing for Deccan Chargers. He played 16 matches and scored 362 runs that year with a best of 52 runs at an average of 27.84 and a strike rate of 114.92.
He also bowled a couple of dozen overs this season and scalped a total of 11 wickets including a hattrick against Mumbai Indians. His all-rounder performance helped Deccan Chargers to lift the IPL 2009 title.
3. Saurabh Tiwari (2010)
In 2010, Saurabh Tiwari was a 20-year-old young player who had an MS Dhoni lookalike hairstyle. However, he was a left-handed batter, played 16 matches for Mumbai Indians that season, and with a strike rate of 135.59, he scored 419 runs at an average of 29.92. He scored a total of three 50 plus scores including his best 61(37) against Delhi Daredevil.
4. Iqbal Abdulla (2011)
Iqbal Abdulla, the Emerging player award winner in IPL 2011 represented Kolkata Knight Riders as a left-arm spinner in 2011 in 15 matches and scalped a total of 16 wickets. With a tight line and length, he was the toughest bowler of the season with a very low economy of 6.10.
5. Mandeep Singh (2012)
With still the best season of his IPL career, Mandeep Singh won the emerging player award at the age of 20 while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). He played 16 matches and scored more than 400 runs with a high score of 75. He smashed 432 runs at an average of 27 and at a strike rate of 126.31.
6. Sanju Samson (2013)
Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royal in the ongoing season grabbed the emerging player award in IPL 2013. He scored 206 runs in 11 matches (10 innings) playing for Rajasthan Royals in his debut season. With a high score of 63, an average of 25.75, and a strike rate of 115.73, Samson showed his class skills to the world.
7. Axar Patel (2014)
In 2014, the left-arm allrounder Axar Patel debuted for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and impressed the cricket world with his all-round abilities. He played an unbeaten 42-run knock and also scalped 17 wickets in 17 matches with the best bowling figure of 3/24 at an economy of 6.13. With some terrific performances, he helped his team reach the final and became the emerging player of the year 2018.
8. Shreyas Iyer (2015)
Shreyas Iyer became the emerging player of the year 2015 after smashing 439 runs playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 14 matches. He played at an average of 33.76, a strike rate of 128.36, and scored 83 his best of the season. With his tremendous performances including 4 fifties, he scalped the emerging player award of the season.
9. Mustafizur Rehman (2016)
The left-arm Bangladesh bowler Mustafizur Rehman is the only foreign player on the list who is the only emerging player award winner in the history of IPL. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, with his unpickable slower deliveries he was the toughest bowler to hit in the death overs. He helped his team win their first-ever IPL title with his 17 wickets in 16 matches at an economy of 6.90.

10. Basil Thampi (2017)
Debuting for Gujarat Lions under the captaincy of Suresh Raina in 2017, Basil Thampi is the tenth player on the list of emerging player award winners in IPL. The right-arm medium pace bowler took a total of 11 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 9.49 with a best of 3/29.
11. Rishabh Pant (2018)
Playing for Delhi Daredevils, Rishabh Pant murdered the bowling unit of his opponents in 2018. After playing 14 matches, he smashed a total of 684 runs at a strike rate of 173.60 including a spectacular 128* runs knock with 15 fours and 7 sixes against Sunrisers Hyderabad. At an average of 52.61 Pant smashed 37 sixes in that season and became the emerging player of the year 2018.
12. Shubhman Gill (2019)
Shubhman Gill came to the limelight after his impressive knock of 102* in the Under-19 World Cup 2017/18. Gill scored 372 runs in just 6 matches with a massive 124.00 average in the tournament.
With a high reputation, he played for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019 and goes to score 296 runs in 13 innings including three half-centuries at a strike rate of 124.36.
13. Devdutt Padikkal (2020)
The left-hand batsman was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020. In 15 matches he scored 473 runs with a high score of 74. He smashed five 50s with an average of 31.53 and at a strike of 124.80 which helped him bag the emerging player award in IPL 2020.
14. Ruturaj Gaikwad (2021)
Debuting for Chennai Super Kings in 2020, Ruturaj Gaikwad impressed everyone with his three half-centuries in just 6 matches, at an average of 51.00. Later in 2021, he scored 635 runs for Chennai in just 16 matches, averaging 45.35, at a strike rate of 136.26. He even smashed his maiden IPL century against Rajasthan Royals and became the emerging player of the year 2021. With Rituraj Gaikwad, the list of emerging player award winners in IPL from 2008 to 2021 ends.
Who will win the emerging player award in IPL 2022?
There are several candidates who can win the emerging player award this season.
One of them is Ayush Badoni who plays for Lucknow Super Giants in the middle and lower order. He has won a couple of matches for LSG at the beginning of the season.
The second one is Sunriser Hyderad’s left-arm opener Abhishek Sharma who has been playing well after having a poor start this season.
Another candidate is Jammu and Kashmir-born Umran Malik who is the fastest bowler in the ongoing season. Malik has won 12 lacks in 12 matches for bowling the fastest delivery in each match.
Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians’ middle-order left-arm batter is also one of the players who can win the emerging player award in IPL 2022. He also has performed well and scored some important knocks for MI.
