There is a trend of tape-ball cricket in Pakistan from many years and Junaid was a known entity in the tape-ball community due to his sheer pace. The left-arm pacer was talented just like his idol Imran Khan. When he was just 16 years old, his friends suggested him to participate in an Under 17 trial in Abbottabad which he accepted. Where he was first spotted by a bowler named Ehteshamuddin at the trials. Ehteshamuddin told Junaid that he has speed & potential and should go to Lahore for further trials and then Junaid never looked back from there and later made his first-class debut.

Domestic Career: After a year and a half of the Abbottabad trial, Junaid made his first-class debut for Abbottabad on 24 January 2007. In the match against Multan, he took 4 wickets for 57 runs and the match resulted in a draw. He became the strike bowler of his team and was making his way to international cricket. He even was a part of an unofficial Test series played between Pakistan A and Sri Lanka A in 2010.

International Debut: Junaid was added to the Pakistan Squad during the 2011 ODI World Cup when Sohail Tanveer was suffering from an injury, however, he didn’t get the chance to play in the World Cup. Later on 21 April 2011, Junaid debuted for Pakistan in a T20I against West Indies, and after a couple of days, he also played his first ODI match against West Indies on 23 April 2011.

Fastest Fifty In ODI: Who Hit The Fastest Fifty In ODI?

Junaid bowled two overs in his debut T20I match and was unable to pick any wicket Meanwhile West Indies defeated Pakistan by 7 runs. In the first ODI at Gros Islet, Pakistan defeated West Indies by 8 wickets whereas Junaid Khan again failed to get his first international wicket and conceded 49 runs in his 10 overs.

After 5 months, Junaid played his debut Test match from September 01 to 05 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo. Pakistan chose to field first after winning the toss and bowled Zimbabwe all out on 412 in which Junaid bowled 29 overs and took one wicket for 55 runs with 14 maiden overs. He caught and bowled Craig Ervine to get his maiden Test wicket. Later in the second, Pakistan bundled Zimbabwe all out on just 141 runs where on a spinny surface Junaid bowled just 2 overs and conceded 9 runs for 0 wickets. Pakistan won the match with ease by 7 wickets.

Key Moment: Junaid came into the limelight in the last bilateral series played between India and Pakistan where he performed extremely well and won matches for Pakistan single-handedly. For the first time, he played against India in the first ODI on 30 December 2012 at MA Chidambaram Stadium. The match was known for Junaid Khan’s brilliant bowling against the experienced batting order of India. Junaid bamboozled India after picking up the wickets of Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh & Rohit Sharma in the mandatory powerplay and put India under extreme pressure. India was 29/5 after the end of the first 10 overs, though, Indian captain MS Dhoni took India to 227 after the end of 50 overs with his unbeaten 113 runs innings including a couple of partnerships with Suresh Raina (43) and Ravichandran Ashwin (31).

Including a maiden over, Junaid picked a total of 4 wickets in his 9 overs and while batting, Pakistan chased the target down with 6 wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare.

Pakistan won the 3-match ODI series by 2-1, while Junaid Khan amassed 8 wickets in the series with 3 & 1 wickets in the second and third ODI respectively.

PCB Destroyed Junaid Khan: He was considered to be one of the most talented Pakistani pacers and had a lot of potential in him but many think that Pakistan Cricket Board destroyed his career and didn’t utilize his potential. During his 8-year-long career, Junaid just played a total of 9 T20Is, 76 ODIs, and 22 Tests where he picked 8, 110, and 71 wickets respectively.

Last International Matches: Junaid played his last T20I against India at Mirpur in 2014, last ODI against England in 2019 at Nottingham, and last Test match against Sri Lanka at Colombo on June 25-29 in 2015.
